Archaeologists in Peru have found evidence of the greatest sacrifice of children in the Americas and probably the world, discovering the remains of more than 140 young people who were killed along with 200 llamas, as part of a ritual that was performed 550 years ago.

The site is located on top of a cliff facing the Pacific Ocean in Freedom, a region in the north of the country where the Chimú civilization arose, an ancient pre-Columbian people that was characterized by worshiping the Moon.

«While human sacrifices in the Aztec, Maya and Inca civilizations have been very well documented in Spanish chronicles and with documentation obtained in different modern excavations, the discovery of a large-scale child sacrifice event in the little known civilization Chimú has no type of precedent in the Americas and practically anywhere in the world, "they explained in National Geographic.

The investigations were conducted by an international team led by Peruvian National Geographic explorer Gabriel Prieto, from the University of Trujillo, and John Verano, a physical anthropologist from Tulane University in New Orleans.

The team discovered evidence of 'largest child sacrifice event in the Americas and probably in world history«. "For my part, I never expected to find this," explained Verano.

Excavations started in 2011 when the team discovered the remains of 42 children and 76 flames in a very old temple.

When the excavations were completed five years later, They had discovered more than 140 sets of children's remains and 200 llamas, as well as rope and textiles dating from between the 1400s and 1450s.

After studying History at the University and after many previous tests, Red Historia was born, a project that emerged as a means of dissemination where you can find the most important news about archeology, history and humanities, as well as articles of interest, curiosities and much more. In short, a meeting point for everyone where they can share information and continue learning.
